A BMI calculated between 18 and 25 is considered to be a healthy weight. If BMI is between 25 and 30, this is considered to be a category known as overweight. A BMI above 30 implies obesity. Obesity is related to a range of significant health problems including diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, sleep apnea, and others.

Bariatric surgery is for severely obese patients whose quality of life is detrimentally impacted by their obesity. The option of surgical treatment can be offered to well informed, motivated patients who meet these criteria.
